Raising Hunters

If you were around back in November then you know that I am a hunter, my mother, my sister and even my grandmother is a hunter. Needless to say the men are all hunters too. It's in our blood! We hunt for the meat and if we get a trophy while at it then that makes hunting season even sweeter!

Jake is 7 and he started hunting youth hunts this past year. We decided to get him a rifle for Christmas. We picked it up last week and he's been practicing.

He got a Youth Model .243. He has the arm strength to hold it up for short periods of time. He'll work on that, his aim and gun safety between now and November when hunting season comes in. I am amazed at how fast he is growing up.

and his little brother is right on his heels!

Maybe he'll get this guy next year. He managed to outsmart me in 2010 and he's still around!

Aah, deer meat. Nothing like it. Hmmm... it may be time for me to thaw some out for jerky!

Good choose of gun. I'm probably a little bias though since that's the gun my dad started me off with :). Is that a Leupold scope on it?

Bless you for teaching your kids where meat comes from. Millions really don't know, except in theory.

My oldest has a blast helping me clean my buck I got this year and both my boys love fresh deer meat. One of their favorite things each year is when I take the small tenderloins not the large backstraps but the smaller very tender strips from inside the back) cut them up in 1-inch pieces, wrap them in bacon, stick a toothpick through and deep fry them. They can eat them as fast I get them cooked!

Most of my boys hunt. Our youngest girl wants to hunt too. But she's only three, so she'll have to wait a while. Her daddy says he's getting her a pink gun for her next birthday.

Michelle, Luke is 4 (almost 5) but I took him for his first time in 2009 at 3. It was a warmer afternoon and I let him take his toy shotgun and we sat in the stand for about an hour (he was ready to go home then). All we saw was 1 squirrel with all the noise he was making but he was so excited just to get to go deer hunting and take his own gun! It was worth giving up an afternoon of hunting to see him have so much fun. He went a couple of times with me this year after I got my buck and fell asleep in the stand with me (all our stands are doubles - I like having room when I hunt!) Jake likes to hunt with Daddy.

I am glad to hear you are a family of hunters. Our church sponsors a hunter safety course every year. We have about 75 people attend every year-mostly youth. Enjoy your day and God bless.

These photos look fabulous. We're here in the UK, where guns and hunting are frowned on, but we bought our older son an air rifle a few Christmases ago. Most folks we know were horrified! We didn't care!!
Our kids can't get any other type of gun until they're 18.... such is life
