Homemade Lip Balm

Photobucket
Oh my! The things that making soap leads to! On several of the soap recipe pages there were links for making lip balm. Well you know I had to click on one and I was lead into a world of flavors and oils and butters. This lead me to order a lip balm making kit from eBay and the rest is history. I'm hooked! I have already made peppermint, vanilla and cinnamon. I am ordering chocolate mint, bubble gum and cherry flavoring oils. I see a lot of people getting lip balm for Christmas! There are so many cute containers for lip balm that can be found a thousand different places online. Tubes, pots, tins. All shapes and sizes!

My favorite so far is the peppermint! The kit I ordered only had 1 oz. of beeswax and I was afraid of messing up so I split it and tried half the recipe just in case I messed up! Here's what I used.
Peppermint Lip Balm
1/2 oz. beeswax
2 oz. coconut oil
Oil from 1 vitamin E capsule (as a preservative)
Peppermint flavoring oil

Using a half pint or pint jar, sit it in a pan of water on the stove. An inch or so of water is fine as long as the jar does not float. Add your beeswax, coconut oil, and oil from vitamin E capsule (just poke a hole and squeeze it out). Don't let your water boil but keep it hot enough to melt the beeswax and oils. Remove the jar from the water when melted and add 4 drops of peppermint oil. Stir well (I used a Popsicle stick). Using a pipette, fill your tubes or pour into tins or pots. Careful, they fill faster than you think they will. I ran a couple over. If it starts to thicken before you get the tubes filled, just sit it back into the pan of water for a minute. If you don't use all the melted oil and wax, put a lid on your jar and save it for remelting later when you have more containers. Let tubes sit at least 20 minutes before moving so they have time to harden.
This recipe made 13 tubes.

Cap and label! I made my labels using Photoshop.

These are so easy to do! You can substitute different oils. You can find lots of recipes online. My favorite so far is the peppermint.

That makes 3 peppermint Country Made body essentials I have made now and I love them all. The scrub, the soap and now the lip balm. I think I might just need to have a peppermint give away! Check back soon!

Totally cool! Isn't it funny how one thing gets you started on another. Burt's Bees look out!

LOL! Yes it is Patrice! I started with body scrubs, went to soap, now lip balm! I also have another round of Peppermint soap in the making.

This is really interesting. Found you from Pam's blog. I think this might be easier than making soap. Thanks for sharing. :)

It's been a while, but I love the homemade lip balm. Peppermint is my favorite also.

Ok now that's cool! This coming from a lip balm addict. What kind of flavouring oil do you use? It isn't the same as the soap essential oils, is it? Now you've got me thinking. Dave and I have been going nuts with the soap making. This would be something new!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!I'm so excited!

I can't remember? Are you the one that had the peppermint soap recipe? If so, how do you stop the colour from leaving the peppermints in the soap? Did I grind them too small? just wondering.

Hi Lisa! Yes I had the peppermint soap recipe. I added them at the end of cooking and only stirred enough to mix it in and you could still see a few flecks of red but not much. I just made a new peppermint one yesterday (cold process) using distilled water instead of goat milk and it has a much lighter color. I added peppermint essential oil and a couple of tablespoons of the red sugar made for cookies to it instead of the peppermint candy and it turned out a very light pink color with little red dots. I'm thinking of doing a mint soap using the green sugar.

I am using flavoring oil for the lip balm. From what I have read some essentials oils can be used but not the fragrance oils. I prefer to go the safe route and use flavoring oils. I have found great ones here.

You can get the small 1/2 oz. sizes to try for small batches of lip balm and see which ones you really like without breaking the bank.

Lip balm is as addictive as soapmaking and even easier! I have found a local man selling beeswax and I am so excited!

Have fun making lip balm and come back and leave us a link to any great recipes or pics you have after making it!

I'd love to try making lip balm sometime. I noticed there is a sale here (Wholesale Supplies Plus) on the slide tins for lip balm. The price looks good to me and includes shipping, but I haven't compared it with anywhere else. We've ordered some of the scents from there for soap making, and they are pretty yummy!

I tried this recipe and it turned out great I made cherry. I put mine in little pots because I didn't have the tubes or a pipette. Can I ask where you bought your pipette?

Kentucky Farm Girl said...

Jen, glad you are enjoying the lip balm! I made some with orange that turned out great too. Definitely need to try the cherry. I got my pipette with the first kit I bought but it was only a one time use. Once the lip balm hardened up inside it, I couldn't get it washed out. You can buy packages of the disposable ones (Google disposable craft pipettes) but I broke down and bought a lip balm tube filler and it works GREAT! If your thinking of making them to sell this would definitely be the way to go. It holds 50 tubes at a time. You pop them in and pour the tray full then use a spatula and scrape the extra off the top.

This is a really great recipe! Just wondering though...Are you able to use jojoba oil instead of coconut oil?

Very nice. I make my own lip balm, too. I infuse calendula in olive oil and use honey as a natural sweetener. I use flavor oils and vitamin E as a natural preservative. I also make a wonderful hand/body cream. I've been making my own products for many years. It's nice to find a bunch of others that do the same. Thanks!
